With the advancements in artificial intelligence and integrating that technology with the internet of things, we have come farther faster in the last 15 years than the previous 50 years combined.
It was not very long ago that we were pulling papers off the fax machine called ‘internet leads’. If you have been in the auto industry for 15 years or so, you probably remember those days…3 people staring at the fax machine waiting for it to print out so they could grab it and go call the lead. Or, wander back to 1995 when consumers wanted fax machines as an option on their car.
In 2001, NBC News reported that in “50 years, we would even have cars that drove themselves”. Welcome to the future much faster than anyone could have predicted! I’m waiting for the day when my laptop can pipe the new car smell into my office when I visit a dealer website.
Until that day comes, there is an amazing new format for web design termed Immersive Website Design. By definition, immersive website design — blends traditional informative qualities with entertainment elements.
In-depth graphics, integrated video and interactive features help make visitors forget they’re browsing a web page. There are just a few examples of this type of design on the internet today. One of my favorite examples is Abbey Road presented by Google where you can explore where the Beatles recorded their albums: (https://insideabbeyroad.withgoogle.com/en/welcome).
What if your dealership online showroom was an actual representation of the customer experience in real time? Let’s say a customer goes to your website and the first thing they see on your home page is the steps to your showroom, with the sounds of what they would hear if they were actually there. Instead of clicking a button on your website, they click and drag the door open with their mouse, and the webpage automatically moves them forward into your showroom. Once the page advances, they’re able to move to different pieces of inventory on your floor and actually ‘walk’ around it, start the engine, or gaze at the tower if they want.
The technology to create this type of online showroom experience already exists. But, it’s pricey. Pricey like a fax machine in 1985. Immersive website design will be at a dealership in the future, and I can’t wait to see who steps up to the plate first.
